Under the Affordable Care Act, Maintenance Trainees are also eligible to elect basic health coverage for a minimal fee.
Maintenance Trainee positions are temporary for a maximum of one year from time of hire.
Appointment can be extended to two years from time of hire if placed in cross-training opportunities.
In order to allow the maximum participation in the City's MASH Trainee Program, preference may be given to applicants who have not participated in the program within the past 5 years (since January 2018).
Finally, preference will be given to Pasadena residents.
Proof of residency (valid California driver's license or identification card or copy of utility bill) will be required at the time of applying and will also be verified at the time of appointment.

Essential Functions The major responsibilities of this position are listed below.

When assigned to a Maintenance trainee position, the incumbent will perform the following functions under direct supervision and in a training capacity:
Performs general labor.
Performs landscaping work such as mowing, raking, weeding, watering, trimming shrubs and trees, and irrigation installation.
Removes and disposes of debris, trash, and eye sores such as old stoves and refrigerators.
Removes debris from homeless encampments.
Paints exteriors of single family homes; washes, sands and scrapes surfaces off painted areas, and lays drop cloths.
Cleans brushes and equipment, performs related maintenance functions, and other tasks as assigned.
Installs solar panels on single family homes.
May also be required to drive a City vehicle depending on assignment.
Trainees will also receive coaching for career readiness, including job searching, resume preparation, and interviewing techniques.
Since incumbents in this position are undergoing training, a willingness to learn is desirable.
Qualification Guidelines Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
Knowledge, skills and abilities include:
Ability to read and write and follow written and oral instructions; must be in good health and physically able to perform heavy manual labor work assignments; have the physical strength and agility to lift up to 50 - 60 lbs, bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 50 - 60 lbs; ability to climb and work off ladders; knowledge of office procedures and ability to deal tactfully and effectively with supervisors, employees and the public.
Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment.
SELECTION PROCESS As a result of the written examination process, an eligible list of candidates will be established.
Additional points will be added to the passing score of candidates who are City of Pasadena residents.

Vacancies occurring in the MASH Program may be filled from the eligible list.
VACANCIES The MASH Trainee Program has ongoing vacancies but typically hires 20-30 trainees per calendar year.
Vacancies occurring over the next 24 months may be filled from the established eligible list.
Special Requirements Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
Candidates will undergo a comprehensive background process prior to time of appointment.
Fingerprints will be taken of each candidate at time of appointment, and a driving record may be requested at the time of appointment.
